Today I want to share a poem with you that has been published in a Poetic Reveries anthology titled Daydreams and Lost Wishes. The 430-page anthology was published in March 2023 and is filled with many talented poets’ words. I’m honored to be a part of this.
While this piece is not based on a personal experience, I often think of the price of success and fame that some people pay. Some – because I don’t believe everyone decides to sacrifice their integrity. But I wanted to write about the idea that chasing the limelight and standing in the limelight can feel exhilarating until you notice you’re standing there alone, and by the time you realize that it wasn’t what you value the most in life, it’s too late.
Limelight
On top of the stairs, looking down at the ghosts of me,
they still follow me after all these years.
I thought it would feel different, standing here where I always
wanted to be, yet somehow, I can’t ignore this pervasive
emptiness taking over me. And I wish I could go back to the
safety of the past, where daydreams were made of rose gold
clouds and butterflies.
Where you and I were still meant to be,
talking about escaping to the jungle
where the humid air would make our hair curly.
It feels so lonely here without you at the finish line,
and I wonder if I lived on misplaced desires all along.
My mistakes feel heavy now.
Blinded by the limelight, I lost sight of your face, I only held
onto my Dolce & Gabbana shades and my fake smile.
There is no going back now. I can only hope to find you again by a
miracle, in a time loop, where the warped paths of our souls meet again.
Because with all that I gained, losing you was not worth it.
